A living museum
of a people come and gone
The Charles H. Nash Archaeological Museum at Chucalissa is a living museum; a
breathing memory of a people long gone and a way of life carefully reconstructed.
A portal to the past, Chucalissa village has been recreated in detail, complete
with life-sized reenactments that forever capture an ancient snapshot of day-to-day
existence. The village is built on the actual archaeological site of the 15th
century village. Over the years, the site has yielded many of Chucalissa's treasures
and secrets. To this day, it remains as one of the most important archaeological
sites for Native American culture in the country, and has been designated a National
Historic Landmark by the Department of Interior.
The museum has a close connection to the Choctaw Nation, and is a part of The
University of Memphis. Lectures, archaeological seminars and the continuing use
of the site for Native American gatherings and ceremonials give the museum an
authenticity few can match. As a unit of The University of Memphis, the Charles
H. Nash Museum is a valuable learning center for students, academics and the
instinctively curious alike.
But our most important supporters are people like you, individuals of compassion
who do not wish to see the sun set on this extraordinary educational site. Your
funds – your effort – ensures that the vanished people of Chucalissa
maintain a valuable place in history. If you would like to become a member of
